Paul Kuimet’s exhibition Perpendicular, which takes place in the two ground floor halls of the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM), deals with the irreversible effects of time on objects, buildings and institutions. It consists of two new works that are made especially for the exhibition and are connected by an installation-like exhibition design.
In a formal sense, Kuimet’s new works move along his familiar trajectory – they are based on the specifics of the 16 mm film and photographic medium as well as the viewer’s relation to the flatness of the image and its location in space.
The the exhibition is comprised of a 16 mm film loop that centres around an elusive object – a reconstruction of a 17th century geometrical sundial – and a photo series depicting the Ministry of Finance building being demolished. The grid – one of the favourite motives of modernist architecture – is abstracted from the photo series and transferred to the exhibition space. This “formalisation” of the EKKM’s post-industrial space in turn reflects the attempt depicted in the film of domesticating and rationalising a natural phenomenon through geometry.
Perpendicular stitches together time in a non-linear way and uses aesthetic means to connect a pre-modern (and pre-capitalist) object with the demolition of a modernist building (and financial institution), modelling the different layers of time and eras into one integral installation.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual publication by Lugemik Publishing, which gives a contextual overview of Paul Kuimet’s newest and previous works. The authors of the texts are literary scholar Jaak Tomberg and critic and curator Chris Sharp. The publication is designed by Indrek Sirkel.
