Johnson & Johnson

“Somewhere in Europe”, 2006

video installation, Brillo Box 195x195x200 cm

Johnson ja Johnson’s (Indrek Köster ja Taavi Talve) Somewhere in Europe is a paraphrasing of Andy Warhol’s Brillo Boxes, which highlights local arts culture soft-based love for art.

The work of art consists of a video that documents the artists’ perfomace and a supersize copy of the Brillo Box. During the perfomance the two artists, dressed in suits, carrying well-executed copies of Warhol’s Brillo Boxes, walk around the city of Tallinn. The search for suitable context for these pieces of symbolic art within the local enviorment fails because nobody seems to be interested in them. A farewell to Warhol’s aesthetics, deemed useless in the periphery of Europe, ends the video.

The title comes from Ariel Pink’s song with the same title which can also be heard in the background. The work was acquired by EKKM for one conceptual dollar.
